Why AI Alone Will Not Save Your NRR: Entering the New Era of B2B Sales

Recently on our podcast, I spoke with Alkim Mete, Director Enterprise Sales at Microsoft AI. We took a deep dive into the current B2B SaaS landscape, and several topics came up that have stayed with me ever since.

We find ourselves in a fascinating dilemma: on one hand, market pressure demands maximum AI automation, while on the other, software projects are becoming so complex that customers can no longer see the forest for the tech trees. For Go-to-Market teams and Customer Success Managers, the pivotal question arises: How do we cut through the noise to deliver the concrete, visible value of our solution rather than just selling software?

The Art of Translation: When Silos Refuse to Speak the Same Language

One of the main reasons IT projects fail to reach their full potential lies in internal silos. On one side, we have technical geniuses (like my co-founder Stefan) who design scalable architectures and elegant systems. On the other side sits the CFO, focusing primarily on ROI, cost reductions and risk mitigation.

Both are right, but they speak completely different languages. We need to serve as the translators. I like to use analogies here: a complex concept like "Cloud Native" is like a neatly organized Lego set. You instantly find what you need and build in record time without drowning in chaos.

The problem is that we often lose this clarity after the contract is signed. Teams rush straight into operational software integration and lose sight of the original business case. A quarterly business review once a year is simply not enough to safeguard the solution's long-term value.

AI Agents: Strong in the Engine Room, Weak at the Negotiation Table

AI is an incredible tool for efficiency. Whether executing code reviews or managing infrastructure, machines deliver undeniable speed. In our CVM platform, we also leverage AI-driven analytics to help close deals and unlock strategic insights.

However, the vision of AI agents or avatars taking over complex B2B sales entirely is dangerous. At the end of the day, deals are built on trust, and trust remains a fundamentally human currency. People buy from people. When it comes to real context and strategic advice, decision-makers look for conversations with experts, not algorithms.

The Skillset of the Future: Value Engineering & Commercial Storytelling

As AI takes over background tasks, one combination becomes an absolute superpower: technical fluency paired with commercial storytelling.

The most successful market leaders connect highly complex cloud architecture decisions directly to the strategic objectives of the C-suite. No jargon, just a clear line of sight to measurable outcomes.

To maintain this focus during high-pressure periods, looking beyond daily business helps immensely. The structural discipline required when composing classical music bears a striking resemblance to designing a clean Customer Value journey. Similarly, lessons from competitive sports help maintain focus on core priorities even when facing setbacks.

Make Customer Value the Engine of Your Growth

B2B sales is transforming radically. Those who combine deep technical expertise with empathy and a structured Value Management Journey will win out. According to McKinsey, companies with mature practices in value realization achieve a Net Revenue Retention (NRR) roughly 7% higher than their peers.

It is time to make customer value the core engine of our growth.
