Why Customer Success Must Drive Revenue
Customer Success has evolved far beyond basic onboarding and customer support. In our latest episode of To Customer Value and Beyond, Steven Lewandowski and Mariia Bondarenko sat down with Mikael Blaisdell, founder of the Customer Success Association and creator of the 66,000-member Customer Success Forum on LinkedIn.
From the early days of SaaS in 2006 to today's AI-driven landscape, Mikael shared hard-hitting truths about why customer value must be the ultimate growth engine for modern B2B tech companies.
Customer Success is a Revenue Engine, Not a Cost Center
Back in 2016, most CS leaders rejected the idea that Customer Success should own revenue. Fast forward to today: over 90% of US CS teams own revenue, compared to roughly 60% to 70% in Germany. CS is not about preserving warm feelings; it is about driving bottom-line impact. When you sit down with a client and demonstrate how your partnership directly increases their profitability, claiming your share of that created value becomes a natural business conversation.
The Jazz Band Metaphor: Aligning Sales, Product and CS
Mikael compares cross-functional GTM alignment to a jazz ensemble. A saxophonist, guitarist and drummer all know when to take the lead and when to fade into the background. In SaaS, Sales, Product and CS must operate with the same harmony:
CS understands real customer use cases and should have veto authority over sales pipeline deals or product features that fail to align with the Ideal Customer Profile.
Product teams must assign tangible monetary value to features based on the business jobs they accomplish rather than building features requested by vocal users.
CS leaders should act like radar officers for fighter pilots, vectoring GTM teams toward high-value target accounts.
Ditch Vanity Metrics: CFOs Speak Profitability
It is time to eliminate NPS and CSAT from executive conversations. CFOs do not care about how many QBRs you conducted or whether a client claims they might recommend your product. They care about cost to serve, retention rates, profit margins and predictable recurring revenue streams. CS teams must connect internal activities directly to quantifiable revenue and realized customer outcomes.
The Balance Between AI and Domain Expertise
While AI handles simple support queries brilliantly, it cannot replace human domain expertise. Complex commercial discussions, relationship management and deep industry context require genuine experience, logic and business fluency. The future belongs to consultative teams who speak their customer's operational language fluently and guide them toward measurable success.
